Confessions of a Model Snob: Spring/Summer 2017 Runway Report
The runway has been about the clothes for the past few decades. We know this because most Fashion Week coverage is based around critique of designers, who is wearing what from the collection in the front row and how to work trends into your own wardrobe. We also know this because of the way that designers have cast their shows for years. There was an era of designers casting big name models with huge personalities (think: Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks, Christy Turlington, etc.) in order to give their clothes a personality of their own. Then came the 90's. Models were cast as not much more than clothing hangers, competing on who could be the waifiest and most maleable to designers. This season, the runways were full of up and coming models, making the clothes their own instead of being a blank slate. A mix of interesting features and the ability to transform from show to show, these women personify our generation's feelings toward fashion. Everyone can be who they are, or choose to be someone else. Everyone has a chance to make an impact on this industry. While many new models graced the runways this season, some stood out more than others.
Kylie Vonnahme is an American model (from Denton, TX!) who rocked the runway this season. Although she was not featured in an obscene amount of shows, she was booked as an exclusive for the Alexander Wang show - a coup for any young model. Alexander Wang shows have a way of asserting who the cool crowd is in the industry, so for Kylie Vonnahme to have walked as a part of the "Wang Gang" foreshadows a huge career for her as an indie favorite. This season, Kylie also walked for Versace and Chanel. Fun fact: Kylie was discovered at a Taylor Swift concert!
As a mainstay on the runway for so many big brands, you would never know that HoYeon Jung was the runner-up on Korea's Next Top Model. This woman walked for brands such as Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and Opening Ceremony during Spring/Summer 2017 Fashion Month. Her latest calling card - shockingly bold red locks that truly stood out on the catwalk. She is represented by Elite Model Management around the world, and The Society Management in NYC.
It's easy to see why this Brazilian model was so coveted this season. Her large, light eyes and pouty lips give her an incredibly unique appearance - a quality that designers were falling head over heels for. Ellen was a standout in shows like Chanel, Sacai and Valentino. Her romantic features make her a perfect fit for these big name houses, but can also be transformed to give off the cool-girl vibe that is so popular for brands like DSquared, Alexander Wang and Altuzarra whose shows Ellen also appeared in. Keep an eye on this model - she's sure to pop up in campaigns and on runways for seasons to come.
There is no one else like Nora Attal walking the runways right now. Nora's gorgeous features and exquisite profile make her an undeniable choice for designers. This season, she walked in shows for Prada, J.W. Anderson and Nina Ricci - showing her vast versatility and relatability. With the number of shows that she has appeared in only increasing, I'd say that we will be seeing a lot more from Nora Attal in the fashion-sphere.
Kyona van Santen
Kyona van Santen definitely caught my eye this season. There is just something about models from the Netherlands that screams interesting and individual. Kyona's look is exactly that - with incredible bone structure (not just cheekbones, this woman was also blessed with a jawline to die for) and a long, elegant neck, she resembles a swan in the best way possible. This season, Kyona walked the runway for Miu Miu alone, but I can see this model going far in the industry. A long term prediction: Kyona's looks would make her perfect for the Victoria's Secret runway.
Agnes Akerlund is a new addition the modeling world, but is surely not a one hit wonder. Walking only for Saint Laurent this season (one of my favorite brands), Agnes made a splash in the cool-girl world. Her doe eyes, bushy brows and unique nose make her a ruly different girl to any other that walked the catwalk this season. It's safe to say that Agnes will only continue to find more work in the modeling world, and we will keep you updated on her successes.
