Confessions of a Model Snob: Runway Report
After a whirlwind four (ish) weeks, Fashion Month has ended. We've witnessed outstanding showings in New York, London, Milan and Paris, the "big four" weeks of the season. Now, as other cities around the world gear up to show off their most talented designers, I'd like to take a step back from the clothing and discuss who's wearing it: the models. The models are my favorite part of the fashion world. The way that designers choose which beautiful women (and they are all beautiful) will showcase their designs (which faces match the designer's aesthetic, whose shoulders look the best in a certain gown, etc.) has fascinated me ever since I started watching America's Next Top Model. I scour fashion news sites hoping to hear the latest news on which supermodel is walking for which designer, who is opening the shows and closing them and who has simply fallen out of fashion. With the shows in Paris coming to a close, I thought it was the perfect time to discuss my favorite models from this season.
Aya Jones is new to the modeling world. After debuting last fall in the S/S 2015 collections, she walked in an impressive 43 shows according to models.com. Among these shows were Alexander McQueen, Isabel Marant, Dior and Versace, proving the young model's versatility. Aya Jones caught my eye in every show I reviewed, standing out in a sea of faces that were otherwise pretty similar. Her heart-shaped face and slightly hooded eyes are a contradiction of innocence and allure. Represented by The Lions in New York, Oui Management in Paris and Monster Management in Milan, Aya is one to watch in the upcoming seasons.
While Maartje Verhoef is well-known in the modeling world (she walked the most shows of any model last season: 66!), the general public may not be as familiar with her name. From the Netherlands, Maartje began walking in major fashion shows in 2012, making a name for herself by debuting at Prada in the S/S 2013 collection. This season, she walked in 62 shows. She is ranked in the list of Top 50 Models on models.com, putting herself in the company of Lily McMenamy, Malaika Firth and Amanda Murphy, among many others. With two strong seasons in a row, Maartje has shown that she is a force to be reckoned with.
Things are going well for this Swedish model. At the age of 19, she has already landed herself on the Top 50 Models list on models.com. This season alone she walked in 57 shows including Kenzo, Chloe, Elie Saab and Balenciaga. Hedvig's strong brows may remind you of Cara Delevingne, but that's where the similarities end. Cara's wild child personality makes her relatable, while Hedvig tends to give off a more solemn, mysterious vibe in her photos and on the runway. When you look at her she is instantly interesting, if only because you can't quite tell what she's thinking, or what she'll do next. Represented by agencies in six cities around the world, Hedvig's presence in the modeling industry doesn't seem to be fading any time fast.
Taylor Hill is the model on this list that most people would recognize, if only because she has appeared in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Her ability to work in both the high fashion area of the industry and the commercial side makes her one of the most bankable models in this post. Taylor Hill's natural beauty makes her attractive to a mainstream audience, while still being interesting enough for high fashion brands to hire her. Taylor walked in 31 shows this year, much less than Aya, Maartje or Hedvig, but she has commercial success to make up for it.
