An Homage to Oscar
Less than a week after his passing, I am still thinking about Oscar de la Renta. The designer had been battling cancer since 2006 but continued to show collections throughout that time.
For as long as I have been interested in fashion I have heard his name. Oscar de la Renta. I've seen his face as he closed every one of his runway shows. I've witnessed many first ladies wearing his gowns, as well as countless celebrities gracing the red carpet in his creations.
His garments have always been glamorous, feminine and most importantly sophisticated. Oscar designed for a woman, someone who had been through a lot and knew what she wanted.
As I've gotten older I've begun to understand the appeal of an Oscar de la Renta collection. Expertly crafted and flattering to the feminine silhouette, de la Renta knew how to make women look good. I couldn't think of a better way to memorialize this legendary designer than to share my favorite Oscar moments:
Taylor Swift in Oscar de la Renta at the 2014 Met Gala
If there's a statuesque woman who can pull off Oscar de la Renta it's Taylor Swift. Her penchant for feminine tailoring and retro-inspired looks made Oscar de la Renta a perfect choice for her Met Gala gown. This stunning pink confection accentuated her curves, while making a modest statement. This gown symbolizes everything that Mr. de la Renta stood for, and it was one of my favorite looks at the Met Gala this year.
Oscar de la Renta's appearance in The September Issue
The famed documentary The September Issue was a godsend for someone who was interested in the fashion industry, but had no way of getting an inside look other than through magazines. Its exploration of the many months it takes to put together a September issue of a fashion magazine was eye-opening for me. Along with Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington, the documentary featured many designers and fashion influencers. Oscar de la Renta's cameo showcased him giving Anna Wintour a preview of his collection. The designer's easy demeanor was immediately endearing and demonstrated why he's known as the gentleman of the industry.
The Many Brides He Dressed
For a bride, the single most important part of her wedding day is the dress she chooses to wear. When a bride wants to feel glamorous, feminine and understated she chooses Oscar de la Renta. Some of the world's most chic women have chosen Oscar for their big days: Kate Bosworth, Amal Clooney and Jenna Bush Hager being among them. These women exemplify Oscar's ideal woman: chic and accomplished. Not only were the gowns stunning, but they also didn't overshadow the women wearing them. First and foremost, Oscar was about the woman.
